Panic Mode & the Panic Button
Updated
by Hitchhyke Admin
At Hitchhyke, the safety of our Riders and Drivers is our top priority. That's why we've developed the Panic Button, a safety feature designed for both Riders and Drivers to help alert local emergency services and designated emergency contacts if you're in a situation that makes you feel unsafe or uncomfortable. Here's everything you need to know about the Panic Button and Panic Mode for both parties.
What is the Panic Button?
The Panic Button is a feature prominently displayed within the app interface during a ride, accessible by both Riders and Drivers. It's designed to be an easy-to-access, instant alert system that you can activate in unsettling situations. In the event that the panic button is tapped by mistake, you will have 5 seconds to cancel the action. If not cancelled within that time, alerts are automatically sent to local emergency services and your designated emergency contacts.

What Happens When I Use the Panic Button?
Once you activate the Panic Button, either as a Rider or Driver, and alerts are sent out, your profile enters Panic Mode. It's important to note that the other party involved in your ride will not be notified that you have activated Panic Mode.
What Happens After I Enter Panic Mode?
Once in Panic Mode, after your ride ends, we will promptly follow up with you for a "proof of life & safety" request. If we do not receive this proof, we will contact emergency services and your emergency contacts on your behalf.
When we receive proof of life and safety, we then require details about the incident that led to the use of the Panic Button, regardless of whether you are a Rider or Driver. Depending on the situation, we may also require you to provide a police report as evidence to substantiate your claim.
You will have 15 days after the incident to provide a police report or any other necessary proof. Upon receiving your evidence, we will conduct an investigation into your claim, typically concluding within 15 days.
Please note, the accounts of both parties involved will be suspended during the investigation period. If the other party is found at fault, they may be permanently removed from the platform. However, if you are found to have made a false claim, your account may be subject to permanent removal.
When Should I Use the Panic Button?
The Panic Button is there for your safety, comfort, and peace of mind, whether you're a Rider seeking transportation or a Driver offering a ride. We advise using it in instances where:
- You feel your life or health is at risk from another party.
- You are willing to contact the police about your situation.
- You are prepared to file a police report about your situation.
At Hitchhyke, we are committed to creating a safe environment for all our users, Riders and Drivers alike. If you have any questions about the Panic Button or Panic Mode, please feel free to reach out to our support team. Stay safe with Hitchhyke!
