How to report damage caused by passengers

by Hitchhyke Admin
If a passenger causes substantial damage to your vehicle and it requires cleaning or repairs, we’re here to help.
Note: You must submit a report within two hours of the incident AND before accepting another ride.
As soon as you provide all the requirements listed below, we'll begin processing your damage report. Passengers are responsible for damage fees which are used to address the cleaning or repair of your vehicle.
Note: Passengers that refuse to pay the damage fee may have their account flagged, and be unable to use Hitchhyke's platform or services.
Requirements for reporting damage
When reporting damage, make sure that you:
- Submit a report before accepting another ride. Make sure you submit the report within two hours.
- Select the correct ride in which the damage occurred
- Take at least two clear photos of the damage
- Tip: If it’s dark outside when taking photos, use your phone’s flash or the car’s interior light
- Report any details about how the damage happened
If you’re unable to meet these requirements, we may not be able to recover a damage fee from the passenger.
Damage fee amounts
Damage fees are to help you repair or clean affected areas of your vehicle only. Fees don’t cover the cost of additional cleaning for unaffected areas.
Damage fee amounts are based on the type and severity of the damage. Here are the typical fees for types of damage:
- $20: Minor damage such as mud, dirt, or animal fur in the car
- $30: Moderate damage such as food, drink, or biowaste outside of the car
- $80: Moderate damage such as liquid, biowaste or bodily fluids in the car
- $150: Major damage like biowaste all over the car or physical damage to fixtures inside or outside of the car
We don’t reimburse for routine cleaning such as:
- Food wrappers or empty water bottles
- Unpleasant smells
- Wear and tear
- Time spent cleaning
- Time spent not driving because of damage
